Paramount Pictures' Top Gun: Maverick is closer than it's ever been to surpassing domestic box office earnings for Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War.

Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount Pictures' sequel to the original 1986 Top Gun, is closer than it's ever been to surpassing the box office earnings for Marvel Studios' Avengers: Infinity War.

According to box office analyst Gitesh Pandya, Maverick grossed $7.15 million domestically in its 12th weekend in theaters, boosting its overall domestic earnings to $673.8 million. With these new earnings, Maverick is fast approaching 2018's Avengers: Infinity Wars, which earned $678 million domestically, making it the sixth-highest-earning domestic release ever. The top five domestic releases ever include Black Panther with $700 million, Avatar with $760 million, Spider-Man: No Way Home with $804 million, Avengers: Endgame which pulled in $853 million, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens which sits at the number one spot with $936 million.

Maverick officially surpassed the domestic earnings for James Cameron's Titanic in August. The 1997 disaster film grossed just over $600 million domestically. Moreover, Maverick also surpassed Titanic as Paramount's biggest film overall. However, Titanic is still ahead of the Tom Cruise-led sequel outside of North America with $1.5 billion at the international box office and a worldwide total of $2.2 billion.

Top Gun: Maverick earned $160.5 million within its first four days of release after opening on Memorial Day weekend, setting new holiday weekend records and becoming Cruise's highest-earning opening in North America. Maverick became the highest-grossing movie of 2022 in the United States when it crossed the $400 million mark, surpassing Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which earned $398 million domestically. Industry analysts also project that Cruise's legacy sequel could cross the $1 billion mark before the end of its theatrical run.

Paramount Pictures' Top Gun: Maverick is set nearly 30 years after the original 1986 film and follows Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Cruise) as he is enlisted to train a new generation of pilots. Cruise and Val Kilmer reprised their roles from the original Top Gun, and the new film also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm.

As Top Gun: Maverick continues to succeed at the box office, it remains unclear when the film will make its way to Paramount+. As suggested by Paramount President and CEO of Streaming Tom Ryan, even the studio is unsure when Maverick will be available to stream. While the previously established 45-day theatrical release window established since the start of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has been a "great success" for certain films, this model doesn't apply to Maverick. "We haven’t decided on that [the theatrical window for Top Gun: Maverick] yet," Ryan said.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, from a screenplay by Peter Craig, Justin Marks and Eric Warren Singer, Top Gun: Maverick is now in theaters.
