TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s economy grew at an annual rate of 2.2% in the April-June quarter, the government said Monday, as consumer spending rebounded with the gradual lifting of pandemic precautions.

After keeping its borders closed to most travelers throughout the pandemic, Japan has slowly begun reopening to tourism, as meanwhile business has returned more or less to normal after various voluntary restrictions were eased.

The U.S. military says an attack with drones hit a compound run by American troops and U.S.-backed Syrian opposition fighters in eastern Syria. The military says there were no casualties or damage. It said Monday's attack took place in the vicinity of al-Tanf base near where the borders of Syria, Jordan and Iraq meet. There was no claim of responsibility for the attack. U.S. and coalition troops are based at al-Tanf to train Syrian opposition forces on patrols to counter militants from the Islamic State group. Such attacks on al-Tanf are rare. U.S. officials said in October they believe Iran was behind a similar attack on the base that month.

Polish officials are marking their nation’s Armed Forces Day holiday alongside the U.S. army commander in Europe and regular American troops, a symbolic underlining of NATO support for members on the eastern front as Russia wages war nearby in Ukraine. Gen. Darryl Williams, the new commanding general of United States Army Europe and Africa, was in Warsaw to attend the ceremony in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. Nearby American, as well as British troops, stood near military equipment on display. The national holiday commemorates Poland’s victory in 1920 over Soviet Russia in a key battle credited with stopping the Bolshevik army’s westward advance.

LOS ANGELES — The songs nominated for the 2022 Emmy for original music and lyrics are each haunted by something. Some are lively, even wacky homages that resurrect sounds of the past — the grand, old "Oklahoma!"-type musical; a calypso wedding toast delivered by (a fictional version of) Harr…

A court in military-ruled Myanmar has convicted the country’s ousted leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, on more corruption charges and sentenced her to an additional six years in prison. The trial was held behind closed doors, with no access for media or the public, and her lawyers were forbidden by a gag order from revealing information. In the four cases decided Monday, Suu Kyi was convicted of abusing her position to rent public land at below market prices, and to have built a residence with charitable donations. She already had been sentenced to 11 years in prison on sedition, corruption and other charges at earlier trials after the military ousted her government in 2021.

Lawyers for American basketball star Brittney Griner have filed an appeal against her 9-year Russian prison sentence for drugs possession. Griner, a center for the Phoenix Mercury and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was convicted on Aug. 4. Griner played for a women’s basketball team in Yekaterinburg during the  WNBA off-season.

The Taliban are marking a year since they seized the Afghan capital of Kabul. The rapid takeover triggered a hasty escape of the nation's Western-backed leaders, sent the economy into a tailspin and has fundamentally transformed the country. On Monday, bearded Taliban fighters staged small victory parades on foot, bicycles and motorcycles in the streets of the capital. One small group marched past the former U.S. Embassy, chanting “Long live Islam” and “Death to America.” A year after the dramatic day, much has changed in Afghanistan. The former insurgents struggle to govern and remain internationally isolated. The economic downturn has driven millions more Afghans into poverty and even hunger, as the flow of foreign aid slowed to a trickle.

Recent executions of four democracy activists in Myanmar have reenergized efforts to get the U.S. and other governments to impose further sanctions on its army-controlled government. Human rights advocates and comments by leading U.S. lawmakers suggest Congress is inching toward passage of the Burma Act, which would impose mandatory sanctions on Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise. The state-owned company's revenues from sales of oil and gas are a vital source of hard cash for the military administration. That makes it a key target in the push to cut off funding for the military’s fight against a widespread backlash against its seizure of power in February 2021.

A red panda that spent two days on the lam after escaping from an Australian zoo was recaptured after he was spotted hanging out in a fig tree in a nearby park. Named Ravi, the 7-year-old panda had just arrived at Adelaide Zoo last week after he was brought in from another zoo. By Friday he was gone. Zookeepers tried to lure him down with bamboo and sweet corn, to no avail. They ended up firing a tranquilizing dart and catching him in blankets. The zoo's director says Ravi is doing well as he recovers in an animal hospital. Meanwhile, the zoo is reviewing CCTV footage to figure out how he escaped.

Armenian officials say that the death toll in a fireworks storage explosion in the country's capital has risen to six. A powerful blast tore through a fireworks depot at a popular market in Armenia’s capital on Sunday, setting off a massive fire that sent a towering column of thick smoke over the center of Yerevan. Officials initially said two people were killed, but the death toll has kept climbing as rescuers were searched for victims amid slabs of concrete and twisted metal. Another 18 people remain missing. At least 61 people were injured. There was no immediate word on what caused the fireworks to ignite, but officials on Monday firmly ruled out a terror attack.

It appears Ralf Rangnick was correct when he made the blunt assessment that Manchester United needed soccer’s equivalent of “open-heart surgery” to fix the many issues afflicting England’s biggest club. Rangnick said that in April and he has since been replaced by Erik ten Hag as manager. It has taken just two painful Premier League games for Ten Hag to understand quite the mess he has joined. United has underperforming and in certain cases unmotivated players, an imbalanced squad, a faltering recruitment team unable to bring in its primary targets and American owners increasingly loathed by the fans. Ten Hag isn't helping himself with some questionable decision-making.

The man's father told journalists that troops pounded on the door of their house at 3:30 a.m. and entered the home. Ibrahim al-Shaham said his son was shot in the head and died afterwards.
